I had the immense good fortune of coming into this world and growing up – as a toe-headed Colorado girl of the 1980s – within a culture and a family that believed in me. Where I’d be without the love, patience, education, resources and encouragement I received from my parents, teachers, friends and community is anyone’s guess, but I doubt it would be here: making a commitment to trek my way to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s tallest peak at 19,341 feet – to raise funds for Intrepid’s Project SAMA, a multi-year early education and empowerment initiative operated by Plan International, whose mission is to promote positive attitudes toward girls in Uganda and to ensure that Ugandan girls are given the same opportunities as boys.
Come September, I’ll be huffing and puffing my way to “The Roof of Africa,” knowing that each step builds awareness and brings much-needed resources to scores of little girls who deserve the opportunity to develop the skills and the confidence necessary to make bold choices and do great things.
100% of all donated funds will go directly to Plan International’s Uganda early education project. All administrative and transaction fees associated with donating through Everyday Hero are paid by Intrepid Travel.
Plan International, Intrepid Travel and Everyday Hero are all headquartered in Australia, so donations will be received in Australian Dollars (AUD). Exchange rates fluctuate daily, but generally speaking 1 USD = 1.07 AUD.
(If you’re like me and math is not your strong suit, that means each Australian Dollar is worth about 94 cents.)
Thank you in advance for your financial support and encouragement as I embark on this epic journey!
